Ahmedabad Kalupur Railway Station Construction Update

Ahmedabad Kalupur Railway Station redevelopment construction in 2026

Ahmedabad Kalupur Railway Station Redevelopment: What Is Being Built?

Ahmedabad Kalupur Railway Station redevelopment is progressing as part of a major ₹2,379 crore infrastructure project aimed at transforming the station into a modern transport hub. The project includes a modern air concourse, elevated roads and multimodal connectivity.

The redevelopment is much bigger than simply renovating the existing station building.

The project includes a large station air concourse, an elevated road network, a Multimodal Transport Hub (MMTH) and other supporting infrastructure.

The new station is being planned to provide better connections between different modes of transport and make passenger movement more organised.

Earlier project details indicated that the redeveloped station would include a unified concourse above the railway tracks, retail areas, parking facilities and improved access roads.

Construction Work Is Already Underway

Construction activity at the site has been progressing in phases.

In April 2026, the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) conducted a site inspection of the Ahmedabad Railway Station redevelopment project. Officials reviewed ongoing work related to the Station Air Concourse, Elevated Road and Multimodal Transport Hub.

The inspection also covered erection work, deck concreting and the overall progress of the project.

This indicates that the redevelopment has moved well beyond the planning stage, with major structural components being constructed.

New Station to Connect Multiple Transport Modes

One of the biggest advantages of the redevelopment will be improved multimodal connectivity.

The station is being planned as a transport hub connecting railway services with other modes of urban transportation. Earlier project plans included integration with Metro, BRTS, AMTS, taxis and auto-rickshaws.

Ahmedabad’s Metro network already has an underground Kalupur Railway station, creating an important connection between the railway station and the city’s metro system.

Heritage Elements Will Remain Part of the Design

The redevelopment is also expected to combine modern infrastructure with Ahmedabad’s architectural identity.

During a 2025 review, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the new station design would reflect Ahmedabad’s heritage.

Design elements inspired by the city’s heritage architecture, swinging minarets, toran entrance gates and kite festival were highlighted as part of the redevelopment vision.

This means the new station is being planned not only as a functional transport facility but also as a structure connected to Ahmedabad’s cultural character.

What About the Completion Date?

There have been different completion timelines reported over the course of the project.

In December 2024, railway officials had indicated that the redevelopment could be completed by 2027.

However, the latest government India Investment Grid listing for the project currently shows the target completion date as March 31, 2028. The same listing identifies the project as being under implementation with a total project cost of approximately USD 299.14 million.

Therefore, the latest available government project database should be considered when discussing the current completion timeline.

Kalupur Is Also Seeing Major Railway Infrastructure Activity

The redevelopment is happening alongside other major railway infrastructure projects around Ahmedabad.

In May 2026, the Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train project completed the launching of a 45-metre segmental bridge over the Kalupur Flyover in Ahmedabad.

The bridge was launched using the Span-by-Span method, with 19 segments weighing around 1,200 tonnes in total.

The development highlights how Kalupur and the wider Ahmedabad railway network are becoming important parts of Gujarat’s expanding transportation infrastructure.

Why the Redevelopment Matters for Ahmedabad

Kalupur Railway Station handles a large number of passengers and is an important gateway to Ahmedabad.

The redevelopment is expected to bring:

  • Better passenger circulation
  • Modern waiting and concourse facilities
  • Improved road connectivity
  • Multimodal transport integration
  • Better parking and pick-up/drop-off arrangements
  • Improved accessibility through lifts and escalators
  • Modern commercial and passenger facilities
  • A station design reflecting Ahmedabad’s heritage

The overall objective is to create a more integrated and passenger-friendly railway hub.

The Bigger Picture

Ahmedabad is rapidly expanding its transport infrastructure through railway, metro and high-speed rail projects.

The redevelopment of Kalupur Railway Station is therefore part of a much larger transformation of the city’s transportation network.

With construction continuing and major structural work underway, the coming years are expected to bring significant changes to the appearance and functioning of the station.

For now, the latest government project information points to March 2028 as the current completion target.

Ahmedabad Kalupur Railway Station Redevelopment: A 16-Storey Vertical Station

The Ahmedabad Kalupur Railway Station redevelopment is planned around an unusual vertical design rather than a conventional spread-out station complex. The project includes a 16-storey building, making the Ahmedabad Kalupur Railway Station redevelopment one of the more ambitious railway-station projects in the country.

The vertical approach is intended to stack different passenger and transport-related functions within a large integrated structure. This makes the Ahmedabad Kalupur Railway Station redevelopment different from a simple expansion of the existing station footprint.

The proposed 16-storey structure is one of the defining features of the Ahmedabad Kalupur Railway Station redevelopment, giving the project a distinctly vertical character and allowing multiple functions to be accommodated within the redeveloped railway precinct.

Ahmedabad Kalupur Railway Station Redevelopment: Platform Capacity Is Also Being Expanded

The Ahmedabad Kalupur Railway Station redevelopment is not limited to buildings and passenger facilities. The railway station itself is also planned for an increase in platform capacity. In November 2025, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced plans for three additional platforms, taking the planned total from 10 to 13 platforms.

This platform expansion gives the Ahmedabad Kalupur Railway Station redevelopment an operational dimension that goes beyond the construction of a new terminal. Additional platforms can provide greater flexibility for handling train services as the railway network around Ahmedabad expands.

The addition of platforms is therefore another important part of the Ahmedabad Kalupur Railway Station redevelopment, particularly because it increases the railway infrastructure available for train operations. The Ahmedabad Kalupur Railway Station redevelopment is consequently being developed with both passenger infrastructure and railway-operational capacity in mind.
